When your brand is $150 million animated films released direct to streaming (Turning Red) and TV series that cost the budget of a small feature film per episode (The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, MarvelTV, et al.), you’re going to need to take some time off now and then to recharge. That’s what’s going on in July on Disney+, a month during which the biggest premiere is the third entry in a series of TV movies about musical zombies in high school.
Zombies 3 (July 15) is the followup to two movies I wouldn’t know existed were it not for my young children, and is set in a world in which zombies exist, but as more of an unpopular teen clique than an outright menace. Did I mention these are musicals? I did.
Fans of musicals set in high schools will also no doubt cheer the return of High School Musical: The Series, a TV series based on the popular film franchise about a musical high school. You get it.
Here are the rest of the month’s slim pickings, including the intriguing Light&Magic (July 27), a docu-series promising to take us into the world of George Lucas’s famous special effect studio Industrial Light & Magic.
